In 2020, Juddy Roller was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to work alongside Australian artists Kitt Bennett and David Lee Pereira to create four larger-than-life murals for the newly refurbished Hilton Hotel. Tucked away in the quiet laneway of Little Queen Street, the Hotel, which was once Melbourne’s 1930’s heritage-listed Equity Chambers, has been transformed into a reimagined version of itself, being contemporary whilst paying homage to its former glory. Commissioned by DuoProjects, Juddy Roller worked with Kitt and David over the course of a few months to create several murals that reflected the duality of modern city living, the location’s rich history, as well as the beauty of growth and change. For the entrance of the hotel, Kitt teamed up with French artist Jaw to design the intricate 60 metres long and 3-storey high composition, blending iconic Melbourne imagery with subtle nods to the restaurant Luci and The Douglas Club bar, which are located within the hotel. Kitt also installed the mural on the Level 5 Terrace. Intended as a function space, the work encapsulates the excitement of a night out and blended with the building’s architectural illustrations. For the 7-storey internal lightwell, David worked from a 20m long swing stage to produce a colossal Australian botanical mural that can be viewed from within the hotel rooms. He also created a stunning design for the Executive Suite Lounge, adorning the space in opulent poppies and haze, he has lovingly named it “The Opium Den”.
A big thank you to DuoProjects and CitiPower, as well as the fantastic assistants, Saladbowl Art, Jason Parker and Goodie for making this all possible.
