This January, we welcome the 2020 Lunar New Year, welcoming the year of the Rat. To kick things off, artist Kitt Bennett playfully brings to life the Kirin Soundbar in partnership with Crown. Located along the banks of the Yarra River, the soundbar is a centrepiece of the Lunar New Year Festival, with DJs and live noodle-pulling performances, Kitt captures this joyous time of year with imagery of dragons, lanterns, Tommy the Noodle Man, and lucky colours of red and gold. Melbourne-based artist Kitt Bennett paints large (very large) illustrative murals on an unconventional surface: the ground.
His most recent adventure combined his art with aerial photography to craft the world’s most massive independently created piece of “Gif-iti”. The work, crafted by Bennett alongside collective Juddy Roller, features 10 human figures that craft a “perpetually tumbling” scene when viewed in sequence.
Inhabiting a colossal 9000 sqm of disused waterfront ground space at Port Melbourne’s Fisherman’s Wharf precinct, the project took Bennett 30 days to complete; using 700 litres of paint to compose the work which comprises a series of 10 individual 30-metre-long figures.
The size and form of this mural is unprecedented – four times the size of the previous holder of the title, (which clocks in at 27 storeys high) this mural has taken over the equivalent of 90 floors-worth of ground space.
Painted using only Taubmans acrylic and Monarch Painting rollers and brushes, and made possible thanks to the kind people at Independent Cement and Lime.

The town of Euroa has teamed up with The Evolve Youth Committee and played host to Juddy Roller and artist Kitt Bennett for a double mural install on the towns skate park and an adjacent music hall over the busy weekend. Kitt worked his magic on the skatepark, giving the aged park a fresh new look as well as hosting a live paint by numbers workshop for the public to get involved.
The install took place during the ‘Show and Shine’ car show exhibition, which is one of the towns most celebrated annual events. The weekend was definitely a busy one, and the town of Euroa surely made the most of it, including the mural work, face painting, food vendors, DJ’s on top of the impressive display of cars over the weekend.
The Paint By Numbers workshop was an incredible success, bringing together the community of all ages to contribute to their new mural, and everyone here at Juddy Roller are so happy we’re able to help contribute to these amazing community events. This week we had the pleasure of kicking back with Juddy Roller studio resident- Kitt Bennett. Kitt has an insane knack for drawing in his playful and figurative style, which often warps time and disfigures his subjects to express a vivid and fluid motion like no other.
Kitt and I sat down over a nice cup of green tea to discuss his beloved plants, kombucha and a then a little bit about his artistic side as well.
